Water is essential and a basic need for our bodies. In the western world we are fortunate to have access to an abundance of choices when it comes to our hydration. There are so many choices that it can be dizzying. Without going into the business of water, namely bottled water, it is important to understand that all water is not created equal. The variety of quality in water bottled and “clean” filtered water can be dramatically different. The term “alkaline water” Has become popularized as a way to identify water.

What is alkaline water?

Alkaline water (the consumer term for “basic” ) is a term to identify that water has a pH is over 7.5 (on a scale from 0-14 with 7 being neutral ). The theory behind this scale as applied to water and our best hydration is when we consume something that is basic, or “alkaline” our bodies are optimally hydrated. Even more, alkaline water is thought to reduce internal acidity and promote better whole health and healing. Conversely , when we drink water that has a pH of less than 7 we elevate our internal acidity ( or at least theoretically) This can create a slew of issues internally; inflammation, gut issues, weakened immune system. The source and reason for acidity of water can be attributed to the presence of toxic minerals as well as pollution . These minerals can harm the body. Selecting water that is healing for our bodies should be a consideration when hydrating.

In short, if you have the choice, opt for water with a pH higher on the pH scale. The discussion about bottled water as a business and the nuances within is a “Pandora’s Box” conversation so we will hold off on that for now.

Ending note: We are so lucky to have choices and a relative abundance of clean water. That said, we still need to be mindful and thoughtful about our consumption and use. Be thoughtful and conserve where you can!
